What's different here? What I would do if I were the boss....and I'm not!

There is much to like about Skopje and most of this blog will focus on that. But like any new place, you discover what you would like to change. 

1. Find Lady Bird Johnson. 

This city has way too much litter and way too few barrels along the sidewalks. We need a campaign

 "Keep Skopje Beautiful".



2. Hire DPW/civil engineers.  

Sidewalks and stairs are challenging, full of loose or missing bricks, surprise holes, inconsistent risers in staircases, few hand rails. Do I sound like a cranky OLD lady? Yes, but I fear I will end up with a broken leg! Here's a sidewalk with random screws sticking out of the ground: 




3. Sell Appliances. 

We have no disposal and the dishwasher is broken. (But I actually enjoy washing dishes so this is fine.)

 The washing machine is small so you can only do a small load.( That's OK, I'm wearing the same clothes for many days! )

 No clothes dryer, so we hang the clothes on a rack on the balcony. (I feel like I'm back in the North End. "Anthony.....")

 Not a fan of putting on the stiff air-dry jeans...(they stand up on their own) but they quickly find their way back to feeling comfortable. 

4. Sell soundproofing for apartment building walls and windows.

We hear most of the toilet flushes from our neighbors and a few heated "conversations". But the big downer is the nightclub across the street that pumps out techno music until the wee hours -- but it is only open one night a week so we are getting our beauty rest most of the time.

5. Encourage more vegetarian and vegan options at restaurants. 

Most restaurants have no options. But we did discover a vegan restaurant nearby...it only took an hour for them to serve our felafel.


End of whining ...for now.

The Bus TO Matka Canyon

  This Saturday we decided to take a day trip out to a scenic spot we had heard about, Matka Canyon. Stephen, being Stephen, figured out the whole excursion, how to get there on a city bus. how to get a bus pass, what to expect when we got there.  We invited Christine, the other Fulbrighter in Skopje to join us. The bus amazingly came to pick us up at the place and approximately the time, it was supposed to. This was our first adventure on the bus, so I boarded, showed the driver my "T" card and he waved me away. I learned later that I was supposed to scan the card to actually pay for the trip, but ce la vie. We left the city and headed east into a more " suburban" area, where it was a mix of old crumbling small houses, and massive building boom of McMansions (one was covered in silver sparkles).  The canyon was spectacular, with a great path along the edge, complete with handrails. Where in the World is North Macedonia?

I must admit, I needed to look at a map to find the country. I had heard of Macedonia, but I thought that was in Greece. And it is. But what was this NORTH thing? It was the summer of 2022 and in anticipation of retiring from BU, I looked into spending a semester teaching abroad while I was still technically on the faculty.  The Fulbright program had four options for journalism professors: Japan, Zambia, the West Bank (which in hindsight.....and North Macedonia. Japan is an expensive place to live, I'd been there a few times and spent a semester in China and decided I wanted  to see a different part of the world. Zambia was very interesting, the BU School of Public Health has a big presence there and folks said it was much like South Africa, with good medical access and decent infrastructure. Why Teach Journalism in North Macedonia?

  NoMc  is the country that spawned a lot of the most outrageous “fake news” in the 2016 election. “Pope Endorses Trump” was one social media post that caught my eye. It was made up by a bunch of teenagers in the depressed mining town of Veles in North Macedonia, prompted by a wealthy guy in a nice car who taught the kids how to make click-bait and get rich.     The kids got very rich -- made three times as much money as their parents….and the rest of the world got told a lot of lies.   A free press is not a given in  Eastern Europe (or in the United States at times...) and as a former eastern block country tNoMac does not have a long tradition of journalism without government interference.
